HOMELESSNESS IN THE U.S.: A GROWING HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

Homelessness in the United States has reached alarming levels, affecting individuals and families across the country.

Despite being one of the world’s wealthiest nations, the U.S. faces a deepening crisis that demands urgent action.

Homelessness – The Numbers Speak for Themselves

Over 770,000 people experience homelessness on a given night in the U.S. in 2024, according HUD.

More than 30% of them are families with children.

Nearly 40,000 are U.S. veterans who served their country but now have no place to call home. That’s why we need to value initiatives like the Home Depot Foundation.

California, New York, and Florida have the highest rates of homelessness, but the crisis affects all states.

Why Is This Happening in US?

  • Skyrocketing Housing Costs – Affordable housing is out of reach for millions, especially in major cities.
  • Mental Health & Addiction – Lack of access to proper healthcare leaves many struggling alone.
  • Unemployment & Poverty – A single financial crisis can push individuals and families into homelessness.
  • Domestic Violence – Many women and children flee abusive situations, only to face life on the streets.
  • Lack of Social Services – Insufficient funding for shelters, mental health support, and job programs exacerbates the issue.

Homelessness as a Community Problem: What Can Be Done?

Jethro International’s Civil Humanitarian Diplomats based in the US are engaging in campaigns in favor of this humanitarian cause.

Some initiatives are:

– Community Action – Donations, volunteering, and advocacy can make a real difference.

– Invest in Affordable Housing – More public and private initiatives to provide low-cost housing.

– Expand Mental Health Services – Better access to therapy, rehabilitation, and substance abuse programs.

– Strengthen Job Assistance Programs – Training and employment support for vulnerable populations.

– Improve Shelter Systems – Safe, temporary housing with a pathway to permanent solutions.

Homelessness is not just a policy issue — it’s a humanitarian crisis that affects us all. It’s time for action, compassion, and real change.
